• Normally all voices in the score are equally accessible, and notes and rests inserted on the nth staff from the highest OF ITS PART go into voice n of the part (on the top or only staff of the part, voice 1; on the next staff of the part, voice 2; etc.). However, the “Look at Voice” command (View menu) lets you specify a single voice that is to be “looked at”.  It causes all other voices to be dimmed and their component notes, rests, slurs, and beams then cannot be selected or manipulated.  Furthermore, all notes and rests inserted will go into the “looked at” voice, regardless of the staff; this allows putting several voices on a staff, or having any voice cross staves within its part.

• The initial voice number shown when the “Look at Voice” dialog appears is set from the selection, so you can click on a note (or beam or other symbol that belongs to a voice), then give the “Look at Voice” command and, in effect, say “let me see that note’s voice”.  If there’s an insertion point, the initial voice number in the dialog is the insertion point’s staff’s default voice number.

• To make all voices accessible again and displayed normally, choose “Look at All Voices”.

• To get the stems of two voices on the same staff pointing in opposite directions, select the notes in one of the voices and choose the appropriate option from the “Multivoice Notation” dialog (Notes menu).  Then do the same for the other voice.  In complex music, “Looking at” a voice can make it easier to select only the notes (or other symbols) you want.  Or try the “Threader” tool, described under “Selecting”.
